Diafanes- Obviously Clear

From São Paulo, Brazil, the band was founded by Lorena Hollander in the mid 2002, together with Rafael Tortola as an outlet for Hollander’s compositions. In the same year, Diafanes played several shows and recorded their first demo. These activities were experiences for the musical paths the band would follow.

In 2003, now with a new lineup, the band composed and produced the soundtrack of the dance presentation “Sequences”, by Laura Hallasz, which premiered in Berlin. The result of this project, the single “Love in / Wilt”, recorded at the Paulo B studio, confirmes the band’s identity, mixing heavy guitars and drums with melodic bass lines and the signature vocal tone, all with a strong dose of experimentalism.

Parallel to this project, the band presented its new stage show in various venues, such as Ibirapuera Park, CEU, USP, Cursinho da Poli, Souza Lima music school auditorium, São Bento Subway station, and at bars in São Paulo and was received well by the public. A second demo was recorded at the Centro Cultural São Paulo. As a result of this show came the band’s third demo: Live at CCSP.

In early 2004, the band started production of their first album "See Through", which was recorded at Nimbus Studios in Sao Paulo. The result was 13 tracks of experimentalism already shown in their live shows, just better enhanced by the excellent production of the studio. At the same time, the band produced their first video "Love In", which aired on MTV Brazil in November 2004 and received an honorable mention in 2006 at the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival in Alabama.

"See Through" was released in the United States Sept. 17th, 2005 by Digitone Records and the singles "Love In" and "Inside Me" were distributed to national, and web radio stations for airplay.

In 2006 the band was selected by Perry Farrel as one of the 20 semi-finalists, out of 2000 bands, in a competition to get a slot in the Lollapalooza Festival. The band also recorded 2 new singles that will be released in 2007 with the second album of the band, entitled "Obviously Clear", and the video for "Unity".

In 2007 Diafanes toured the United States for the first time. The band played 24 shows in 20 different states passing through big cities such as New York, Chicago, Boston, Minneapolis, among others.

In Diafanes’ compositions, the group seeks a departure from the common pop/rock, exploring original tonalities and timbers. Such ideas come from the diverse influences of the members, from Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, Soundgarden and Radiohead, among other bands from the 90’s, to classic bands like Queen and Pink Floyd, as well as contemporary music composers. In some compositions the band has Arab and Flamenco elements, and reinforces this character using instruments such as snujs and castanets.

The lyrics, all in English, deal with not only personal issues but social issues as well, painting a picture of the human condition that the public can identify with.

The group’s mission is to share their high quality and artistic alternative/experimental rock with as many people as possible. The compositions, lyrics, arrangements and performance surpass the limits of musical production, embrace the visual aspect through the inlays, posters, stickers and a strong web presence. The integration of music and images is one of the group’s main characteristics.

The show

The show is a powerful presentation of Diafanes songs from the 2 albuns. In aproximately one hour Diafanes engages the audience through an expressive execution of their contrasting songs. The affinity of the musicians, as well as their abilities and sophisticated equipment guarantees a high quality presentation.

Sometimes, during songs that mix rock with Arab music, Hollander, along with two others, perform a belly dance.

In addition to original compositions, Diafanes performs versions of songs of Brazilian and international artists. These versions are never identical to the originals; the group prefers reinterpretations of the songs in its own style to reinforce its identity. The versions are adapted at the band’s will for each show, and the set list is never the same. Artists covered by Diafanes include Rita Lee, Smashing Pumpkins, Mutantes, Queen, The Beatles, Supertramp, Elton John, Chico Buarque, Radiohead, Tears for Fears, and others.
